The Matilda Awards for 2017 – which recognise and celebrate theatre in Queensland – were presented on Tuesday 6th February 2018 at The Brisbane Powerhouse. BMEG are very proud of our fabulous performers Merlynn Tong and Elise Greig! Merlynn Tong was awarded ‘Best Female Actor in a Lead Role’ for her one-woman-show ‘Blue Bones’ (Playlab in partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse). Elise was awarded ‘Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role’ alongside Helen O’Leary for her role in ‘Swallow’.
This was a huge night for Merlynn Tong – the writer and creative force behind ‘Blue Bones’. The play went on to receive Matilda Awards for ‘The Lord Mayor’s Award for Best New Australian Work’ (Merlynn Tong), ‘Best Mainstage Production’ , ‘Best Director’ (Ian Lawson), Best Lighting Design (David Walters) and Best Audio Visual Design (Nathan Sibthorpe).
‘Blue Bones’ was brought from development through to production by Playlab in partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse. This year the Gold Matilda Award went to Playlab for for evolving into Queensland’s new-writing theatre company with their inaugural production of ‘Blue Bones’, positioning them nationally as the only company to take work from idea through development, on stage and into publication. This is a very exciting time in Brisbane theatre and we are very proud to be part of the community and support our fantastic talent.
